From Puck to Ball - Hockey in the Falkland Islands

From Puck to Ball - Hockey in the Falkland Islands

18.05.2012 l

The Falkland Islands Dek Hockey club was started in 2006 by a former English National Ice Hockey League player Grant Budd who plied his trade with the Peterborough Islanders. Four teams played for local competitions the Energise Shield, Cable & Wireless Russell Smith Memorial League and the Choice Fruits Cup. The club began playing with the small orange puck and still to this day utilise the local gymnasium for games and competitions. Due to the size of the gymnasium in the Falkland Islands all teams consist of 1 goaltender and 3 outfield players and are limited to 7 players in a team. Teams utilise ice hockey team names and this year,2012, the Blackhawks, Penguins, Hurricanes, Panthers, Flyers and Coyotes are all fighting to claim the top prizes. Recently the Panthers claimed the Energise Shield for 2012. Both male and female players play in the league and the age range of members is from 15-30+ and so far memberships currently stands at 50+ with more eager to join this new and exciting sport.

The passing of Mr Miro Subrt

20.04.2012 l Vit Rezac

On April 6 Mr Miroslav Subrt passed away, an honorary president of the International Ice Hockey Federation and a good friend of ball hockey.

He was a great ball hockey advocate and visionary of new ways of sport development. Mr Subrt belonged among the few highly ranked ice hockey officials who understood the mission of ball hockey for growth of hockey family of sport.
He opened the door to meet Mr Fasel, IIHF President, and particularly Mr Soitchi Tomita, IIHF Vice President who supported ISBHF in approaching asian countries.
Mr Subrt gave us the necessary self-confidence to develop the sport worldwide. He loved sport at every level and his enthusiasm was the same for kids who won a school as it was to award World champions. He was always there with us as he admired how we succeeded – without big money and media support.

ISBHF awarded Mr Subrt an honorary membership in 2004.

Mr Subrt will always belong as an important development figure to the history of ball hockey.

German Street Hockey on Rise Again

After a winter of restructuring their national organization, Germany returned to the World Cup in fine fashion with an 8th place finish in the 10 nation A-Pool, this past June in Bratislava. The National Championship was held last weekend in Bayreuth and the final ranking: German champion 2011: Heilbronn Hornets 2nd: Green Monsters Kaufbeuren 3rd: Bayreuth Hurricanes 4th: Wild Dragons Hamm National team head coach Dieter Hegen scouted all the games on both days as he prepares for 2013 WC in Canada. It is also projected that the nation will return to the World Junior Championship with greater presence in 2012 in Pisek, CZE. The evolution of the new level of cooperation in the country continues at the next general meeting of the german street & ballhockey federation (DSHB) which will be held november 12 / 13 .

Czechs Make It Two In A Row

Czechs Make It Two In A Row

26.06.2011 l Domenic Di Gironimo

Jan Prihoda opened the scoring at 5:00 of the first period with a blast from the slot after a brilliant feed from behind the Canadian net. Minutes later Canada hit the goal post of an open net. Other than that the first period was fairly even in played, and similar in style to the 2:2 draw during the round robin. The Czechs began to exert more dominance in the second period opening quickly with another rocket from the slot off a faceoff. Jan Pospisil made it 2:0. Frank Giustini got one back for Canada within two minutes and the Canadians tempo picked up, producing a few more opportunities before a scramble in front of Canada's net resulted in Martin Krucek slipping one under the arm of goalie David Di Gironimo. The Czech defence, much as it did against the Slovaks in the semi-finals controlled the corners and in front of their own goal, shutting down any good opportunities. All-star Di Gironimo was tested repeatedly stopping 33 of the 36 shots he faced, but it would not be enough to stop Team Czechia. Canada was held to only 19 shots in the game, which Tournament MVP Lukas Heczko handled all but one. This gold mark's the Czech Republic's second in a row and third in history. The silver is Canada's 2nd, to go along with their 5 gold medals. Read more about the game on www.bratislava2011.com or watch a replay on www.huste.tv.

Slovakia Medals Again

Slovakia Medals Again

26.06.2011 l Domenic Di Gironimo

Slovakia defended its streak of attaining a medal at every world championship, the only nation to achieve this. Michal Chovan 3 assists, and game star Robert Kassa's strong performance powered the 7:2 bronze medal victory over the USA. The USA were never able to get energized and mount a comeback as they did the night before in the semi-finals. The boisterous home crowd stayed on hand for the ISBHF Annual Awards which included: Volunteer of the Year - Robert Kostal; International Development - Jaroslav Melisek; Robert Mueller Memorial - Roman Pisny; Junior Player of the Year - Andrew Shaw. Inducted into the Hall of Fame were Richard Kral (CZE), Robert Kostal (SVK), and Gus Kourousis (CAN).

A valiant comeback by the French including a short-handed goal and one with under a minute remaining sent the B-Pool gold medal game into overtime, spoiling a brilliant effort by Usama Mahmood with 3 goals and 1 assist. However, 40 seconds into OT, with a terrific blast from inside the blue line, tournament MVP Ijaz Chaudry made all right again. This is Pakistan second B-Pool gold medal, the first came in 2007. Bermuda captured the bronze, winning over Great Britain.

Czechs check into final

Czechs check into final

25.06.2011 l Domenic Di Gironimo

The Czech Republic scored early, with QF hero Ondrej Kejr supplying the opener at 1:28. Petr Novak bumped the lead to 2:0 on a 5-on-3 powerplay goal. From there Czech goalie Lukas Heczko stole the show with numerous brilliant saves as the Slovaks pressed until the dying seconds of the game. Much credit goes to the Czech defence as well. They did an excellent job of keeping the Slovak forwards to the outside, blocking shots, and overpowering them in the corners. The Czechs now await the winner of CAN v USA to know who will face them in the gold medal game on Sunday. Follow live on www.bratislava2011.com or www.huste.tv or Eurosport2.

Final Four Set

Final Four Set

24.06.2011 l Domenic Di Gironimo

The lions began to roar and set the table for the final four. Greece opened the score lifting false hopes that they could deliver another upset, but the defending world champs stormed back with five goals, led by Czechs Ondrej Kejr (2 goals) and Adam Rousal (3 assists). Meanwhile the USA followed a similar pattern for them of starting the WC's slow and building as the week goes along. The young American lions Bobby Housser (5 pts), Denny Schlegal (3 pts) and Andrew Hildreth (3 pts) were all in fine form in their 5:2 defeat of Portugal. Familiar matchups are on the table for tomorrow. The Slovaks draw the Czechs in the most heated rivalry in the sport. By all accounts this home side looks to be the best ever assembled and should be favoured to win, but the Czechs have a long history of spoiling Slovak dreams. The pressure of winning on home soil should be building now and one wonders whether a serious case of the yipes will be avoided in this ball hockey fairy tale. The same could be said for the Canadians who were shockingly upset in 2009 by the Americans in QF overtime. The same cast of US characters also tied the U20 Canadians in the final minute in 2006 and knocked the heavily favoured side out of the gold medal game, which the Americans would go on to win. Two semi-finals, two rivalries filled with upset stomachs. The B-Pool gold features one expected favourite, Pakistan, and the momentum building France 10:2 winners over Great Britain.

Slovakian Women Crowned

Slovakian Women Crowned

24.06.2011 l Domenic Di Gironimo

Maria Herichova sent the 2,000+ fans into a frenzy with 5+ minutes remaining in the game. It was one of the few chances the Slovaks had on the night, but it found a seam in what seemed like an impenetrable Canadian defence. The show however was stolen by Slovakian goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova who faced a barrage of shots all game, making numerous spectacular saves. 1:0 was all that was needed to crown the ladies of the Slovak Republic first time champions of the ISBHF A-Pool gold medal. A-Pool bronze was claimed by the Czech Republic with a 3:2 win over USA. For more details on these stories visit www.bratislava2011.com.

VILLACH, AUSTRIA has a magnificent skyline. For many urbanites that would normally mean tall buildings. In Villach it is an endless string of mountains that fills your view behind the picturesque city with a village feel. Known as a popular tourist spot for skiing, its summer attributes are equally inviting. The relevance of the tournament location relates to the overall experience for the players. Ultimately the game is paramount, but a positive environment helps build the spirit of the athletes and their appreciation of the task that lays before them in competition.

6th Ballhockey Junior World Championship will begin in a few hours

22.06.2010 l Christoph Curchod

Today, the first games of the sixth ISBHF U20 world championship will take place. Host of this year's championship is the Austrian city of Villach. Villach is an old city that lies at shores of the river Drau, in the middle of the Alps in the province of Carinthia. It has been an important waypoint on the trade routes from northern and central Europe to Italy and the Western Balkans, for at least 2000 years. Being an important railroad junction in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, it became in 1919 suddenly a border city. Nowadays Italy and Slovenia are just a short car drive away.

The city itself has a beautiful old town, situated around a big city square. The main church at the upper end of the town square clearly shows the influx of the Italian architecture. Its tower was build –like an Italian campanile – standing alone, and was attached to the main part of the church only later.

Whenever you look out of a window, you can see the slopes of the Alps. Even if the highest peaks of the Alps are quite far from here. The city of Villach still offers a beautiful view into some of Europe's nicest mountains.

The local people have very warmly welcomed the teams, the officials and the payer's family members in their town. Everything is set for five great days of ballhockey sports.

Who is the candidate for the title? It's difficult to say. The last championships were all close. I remember Aosta in 2006, where the four top teams – Canada, Czech Republic, Slovakia and USA all tied their mutual games. I remember St. John's in 2008 where the same four nations were very close again. Those four teams are well prepared for this tournament, and most likely one of them will become world champion on Saturday afternoon. But still, there is one team, that should not be forgotten, the organiser. Austria had very good U18 teams in the past years. So it is not unlikely, that the Austrians might play the role of the pike in the carp pond. And what about the sixth team, Germany? The Germans are returning after an absence of four years to U20 event. They are surely a team that should not be taken easy by anyone.

Writing these lines, I'm sitting high up in the press boxes of the "Stadthalle" Villach, the arena where this event will take place. I'm looking down to the blue tiles of ballhockey surface provided by the Sport Court enterprise, one of the best, if not the best surface to play ballhockey. I'm looking into the round of the still empty arena, which will soon see the world best players born in 1990 and 1991 performing ballhockey at his best.

Today three games are scheduled. At 3.30 pm the tournament begins with a big game: Canada will meet the Czech Republic. At 5.30 pm the next classic: Slovakia plays the USA. At 8.15 pm, after the official opening ceremony there will be another big game: Austria against Germany. This matchup is something special in every sport, the "geographically" small Austria against the big Germany.

Everything is set for a great tournament. Let's the games begin.
