Austria vs Germany II
Austria – Germany 3 - 1 (2-1,1-0,0-0)
The round robin game between these two teams ended 5 to 1 for the host. Both while Austria used a lot of force in their games against USA, Czech Republic and Slovakia; Germany may have been able to economise a little bit more.
It became soon clear that Austria was trying to make the game, while Germany was playing defensively, waiting for breakaways. And they were quite successful on that. In the fifth minute Christian Masel assisted by Benedikt Brückner scored for Germany on a breakaway. Austria worked hard on breaking through the well positioned German defence. In the 11 minute Fabian Stichauner finally managed to overcome Maximilian Dürr in the German net assisted by Kevin Essmann. Towards the end of the period Austria could play a four vs three power play. Marco Zorec on passes from Jürgen Tschernutter and Thomas Kirchner made profit of this situation and bought the home team 2 to 1 in front.
In the second period the spectators saw more or less the same game. Austria was making the game with Germany waiting for breakaways. Austria had to work hard for its next goal. Finally it was Tchernutter who gave his colors the merited 3 to 1 lead. The passes were provided by Zorec and Ungericht.
In the opening minutes of the third period Germany had the chance to shorten the distance playing in power play. But Austria's defence in front of Lukas Schluderbacher didn't allow them to score. Germany now acted plaid more offensively but Austria was still controlling the game. Even if both teams created further scoring opportunities the game ended 3 to 1 for Austria.
Austria finishes on the fifth place of this world championship, while Germany finishes on the sixth place.
