Germany vs Canada
Germany – USA 2 - 7 (0-1,2-4,0-2)
Looking at past world championships, USA was clearly favourite. But in ballhockey this doesn't mean too much.
In the opening minutes the games was then totally open, both teams created some good scoring opportunities. With the time passing by, USA slowly took control of the game, but Maximilian Dürr in the German net hold them off from scoring. In the 8th minute Ryan Crossey finally netted the ball on passes from Eugene Mack and Cameron Beer giving his team the lead. In a good game - that had not the intensity of the prior match - Germany became stronger after the US-lead, but they were not able to place the ball in the net behind US-keeper Chad Howard.
In the second period, USA got a fast start; within the first 45 seconds Nick Carter assisted by Mike Defazio and Josh Merchant and Crossey assisted by Mack get the USA a comfortable 3 to 0 lead. Until the eight minute Carter provided two other goals with Jim Zubik, Matt Wagner, Nick Long and Merchant providing the assists. The game seemed decided for the North Americans. Was it because Germany plaid now stronger or because the USA became a little bit careless? In any case Germany now had its best moments in the game. Christian Masel opened the score for the Europeans in the tenth minute assisted by Robin Platz and Benedikt Brückner. Only two minutes later Platz brought his colors back into the game with his power play goal assisted by Jannick Bätzold and Marco Müller.
In the closing period Germany tried to force the look on their side, but the Americans acted with more concentration then in the central period. When Ron Roth put the mark on 6:2 for the USA assisted by Crossey and Zubik the game was decided. Nevertheless the Germans never gave up fighting and were looking for another goal, but success was not on their side. It was Zubik, on a pass from Roth, who scored the last goal of the game for the USA.
With this victory the USA stays in the race for the final. Their two games against Austria and the Czech Republic tomorrow will decisive for them. Even if Germany has theoretically sill chances to reach at least the bronze medal game, it is more realistically that the team will play on Saturday 10 am in the fifth place game.
