June 23 2011

JUNE 23, 2011 BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA - The stage is set for the Men's portion of the 2011 WC playoffs.

The news of the day though belonged to Zuzana Tomcikova and her Slovak teammates with their 1:0 gold medal win over the Canadian women.  The match presented two outstanding performances.  I have never witnessed such a dominating display by a team in a women's WC final.  The Canadian squad was near perfect in execution and sustained pressure, however the absolutely perfect performance by Tomcikova will evoke memories, and for some nightmares, for years to come.

The women's game came of age last night.  The skill displayed was impressive and entertaining.  It properly rewarded the largest crowd to witness a women's WC match.  The 2,000+ fans filled the cavernous stadium with cheers, chants, and song equal to five-fold their number.  Congratulations to both teams!

The men's A-Pool closed off with a bit of a surprising Portugal win over Czech Republic, but maybe their tight 4:5 loss to Canada truly reflected the Portuguese ability.  Finishing second in the division now gives them a QF date with USA, while the Czechs get Greece.

Canada advanced to the semi-finals with their first place finish and take on the winner of POR v USA.  Slovakia got the other SF nod for topping their division.

In B-Pool the full of surprises French continued their undefeated run and will face Great Britain in the semis, while Bermuda takes on Pakistan in the other.

The only outcome I would bet is for more great action today.

George Gortsos
ISBHF president

This past weekend I had the honour of becoming the third President of the ISBHF. I believe that as a player and coach I have always strived to play ball hockey in a skilled and team way. Now I have a chance to work with all the great leaders of our sport throughout the World who love the game like we all do. I met some great people in Paris. And I would like to thank the representatives of all our member nations who voted me in on behalf of ball hockey players around the World. This is an honour I will handle with the honesty and hard work that made me a successful player and coach. I want to share the main keys that I will strive to work with my fellow board members to make this game better around the World.
